It's advantage Hooda in Rohtak as Jats renew support
Rohtak (Haryana), Apr 28, 2009: Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda's son and Congress nominee Deepender hopes for a cakewalk from this Jat-dominated Lok Sabha seat, given the community's unflinching support to his family.
Interestingly, Deepender is so confident about his victory that he is campaigning for other Congress candidates in different constituencies.
"I am campaigning for other candidates. My people know me and will surely cast their votes in favour of the Congress party," Deepender told PTI over phone from Sonepat.
Among the 12.59 lakh voters in Rohtak, over 50 per cent are Jats, who are known for their loyalty towards the Hooda family, providing a clear edge to sitting MP
Deepender.
Even a powerful organisation of the community has decided to go with this 31-year-old young Congress candidate.
"We have held a meeting of community leaders where we have passed a resolution unanimously to vote for Deepender. He has done a lot for the welfare of the community and the state.
We will do everything to ensure his victory," Akhil Bhartiya Jat Mahasabha's Haryana unit President Sammeran Khatri said.
Out of 15 other contenders, Hooda is expected to get resistance from Indian National Lok Dal candidate Nafe Singh Rathee and Krishan Murti of the Haryana Janhit
Congress in the polls on May 7.
The Congress candidate also enjoys huge support from local youth, as he is the youngest candidate here.
"Deepender is our favourite candidate as he is young, educated and can help us pursue our dreams," Dinesh Singh, a student of a local college and a first-time voter, said.
Though the INLD and the HJC have fielded their candidates from here, INLD President and former Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala and HJC chief Bhajan Lal and his son Kuldeep Bishnoi apparently have little influence over voters here.
Nevertheless, they are slogging it out.
"Deepender has done nothing for the betterment of the people. The law and order condition is bad. The Hoodas have been representing the seats for a long time but no
development had taken place here. I am confident that people here will vote for me, not the Congress," INLD candidate Rathee said.
In the last Lok Sabha polls, Bhupinder Singh Hooda had clinched the seat by defeating nearest INLD rival Bhim Singh by a margin of over 1.5 lakh votes.
