Railways to install hi-tech security systems at stations

New Delhi, May 26, 2008 Concerned over the security of
passengers and attempts to sabotage its property, the Railways
have decided to equip over 100 stations with hi-tech
'Integrated Security System' that includes intelligent
software and CCTV surveillance.
"The advance system includes systems for personal and
baggage screening system, explosive detection and electronic
access and IP (internet protocol) based closed circuit
television surveillance system with intelligent software,"
a railway official said.
"There has been a significant rise in the number of
passengers and there is maximum load during the peak seasons.
The system will help in screening passengers and help prevent
any untoward attempt or incident to harm its property and
passengers," he said.
"Expression of Interest has already been invited to
install the system through public private partnership on BOOT
(build, own, operate and transfer) basis," he said,
adding,"the proposal will be implemented soon after completing
all formalities."
The Railways have a multi-gauge and multi-traction
system covering over a lakh kilometres and has 7,000 passenger
trains that carry 13 million passengers across the country.
"Being one of the most important means of travelling in
the country, it is always on the radar of terror attacks. We
do our best that keep the system intact and safe," the
official said.
More than 5,000 RPF constables and 993 Sub-Inspectors
will be recruited this year, the railway official said, adding
that an advertisement to fill 599 vacancies among ancillary
staff has also been issued.
"Physical and written tests for 993 Sub-Inspectors
have been completed. We will shortly call selected candidates
for interview," he said.
The need for ancillary staff including barbers, cooks,
washermen and sweepers has arisen following an increase in the
number of trains and passengers, the official said.
