New Delhi, Oct 11: If the difference between drainage area, drainage system and drainage basin bothers you, soon you will be able to look up these terms in the world`s first encyclopaedia on sanitation. Apart from such jargon, the 1,000-page encyclopaedia -- to be released early next year -- lists sanitation practices followed around the world and the history of sanitation.
"We started gathering data for the encyclopaedia in 2004. Apart from hard information, the book lists little known facts about sanitation," says Sulabh Sanitation Movement founder Bindeshwar Pathak.
"We will launch this encyclopaedia in April next year, in a special gala event," said Pathak. Sulabh International is a social service organisation which is endeavouring to promote environmental sanitation, non-conventional sources of energy, waste management and social reforms through education.
It has about 50,000 volunteers, Pathak says. The encyclopaedia will also help in standardising terminology and research procedures, largely through examples and articles, he says. The reader-friendly book cracks various toilet models -- such as the Doulton and Jazz models -- and compiles simple facts such as the properties of water.
